1. Select an insertion point or the text you want to format.

2. Choose the commands you want to use from the Format menu and sub-menus.

You cannot use a command to change any type spec for which a stylesheet is formatting the text. If you wish to do so, you must first select the text and choose Remove Styles from the Edit menu. Or you can change the stylesheet type spec to None or no selected option.
