You can manually add space between characters in a selection of text, or at an insertion
point, to achieve special design effects. This is called letterspacing. (In RSG, the term
tracking refers only to reducing space.) You can letterspace characters in thousandths of
an em.
-
Select the text you want to
letterspace. Or select an insertion point. You may find it helpful to magnify your text.
Choose Views from the Document menu, and then choose Double Size. This works best when
your system contains the font at double the size of the character pair.
-
Choose Horiz Spacing from the
Format menu.
-
Select Letterspace as the
Character Spacing option. If a number other than 0 appears in the Amount box, the selected
text has already been letterspaced by the amount indicated. If no number appears in the
box, the selected text has been letterspaced different amounts.
-
Type the amount of space that you
want to add in the Amount box. You can type from .001 to 7 ems.
The size of an em varies. It is the same width as the current type size-for example, in
10-point type an em is 10 points wide. So the amount of space that you remove depends on
the size of the type and the amount of ems you specify (type size x thousandths of an em).
-
Click Apply to see the results.
Each selected character moves the specified amount to the right of the preceding
character, and the following lines adjust to fit.
6 Click OK when you're finished.
To letterspace text .05 em at a time, select the text you want to letterspace, hold down
the Command key, and press the right arrow key. Each press adds .05 em of space to the
left of each selected character.
To remove the effects of
letterspacing, select the letterspaced text and choose Horiz Spacing from the Format menu.
In the dialog box, select Letterspace, type 0 in the Amount box, and click OK.
Removing the letterspacing may not return the pairs to normal spacing if specified
kerning, autokerning, specified tracking, and autotracking are in effect. |
