To Specify Fixed Spaces to Keep Words Together

You can keep two or more words together on the same line by inserting a fixed (or nonbreaking) space between them. You might find this useful for making sure proper names and product names don't break at the end of a line. You can specify the width of the programmable fixed space in thousandths of an em. The preset width is 1.0 em.

  1. Select the text that includes programmable fixed spaces. Or select an insertion point.

  2. Choose Horiz Spacing from the Format menu.

  3. Type the width of the fixed space in ems in the Fixed Space box.You can type from 0 (the fixed space character occupies zero width regardless of type size) to 425 ems. You can specify to a thousandth of an em.

  4. Click Apply to see the results. All programmable fixed spaces in the selected text are changed to the new width.

  5. Click OK when you're finished.
