Click the icon for the right master page you are using.

Create a text block where you want the page number to appear, and select an insertion point.

Hold down the Command, Option, and Shift keys, and type the number 3. Two number signs (##) appear in the text block. The page numbers will appear in the same position on all right hand pages which use this master page, in the font, size, and type style you choose to format the number signs. You can add other text in the same text block, (such as "Page") before the two number signs.

Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the left master page you are using. Page numbers appear on all left hand pages.
To enter a page number automatically on a single page, go to the page and follow step 3.
To change the starting page number from 1, choose Typographic Preferences from the Document menu and enter an odd number for starting Page Number.
To display Roman numerals, use the pointer tool to select the text block you are working on and choose Specifications from the Object menu. Click the Numbering button and select either Arabic, Upper case Roman, or Lower Case Roman numerals.
