To Change the Pen Pattern of a Straight Rule or Border

The pattern that fills a rule or the borders of an object is called the pen pattern. You can choose one of 42 patterns, including Solid and "None" (transparent).

  1. Select the object, objects, or group whose rule patterns you want to change. The preset pattern for all rules and borders except for text and picture blocks is 100% solid color. The border of a text block or picture block is set to None. If no picture is present in a picture block, its border prints as 100% solid color so that you can easily print your document with picture blocks for position only.

  2. Choose Pen Pattern from the Draw menu, and then choose a pattern. For a solid-color border, choose the black square (100% solid color) at the bottom-right corner of the palette. The object may 'disappear' if you choose None or the same color or shade as the background, or a pattern with the same orientation as the object. Choose Select All from the Edit menu so you can see its handles. Then you can select it by itself and make changes to it so you can see it.

To hide a rule or border, choose Pen Pattern from the Draw menu, and choose None. The rule or border becomes transparent and won't print.
