To Automatically Kern Pairs of Characters

With RSG, you can automatically kern pairs of characters whose kerning specs are in the built-in kerning table of a particular font. When you open a new document, automatic kerning is turned on. Choose Auto Kern from the Format menu to turn it off. For information about changing kerning tables, see To Change or Create the Kerning Table of a Font, later in this chapter.

  1. Select an insertion point or a range of text you want to kern. You may find it helpful to magnify your text. Choose Views from the Document menu, and then choose Double Size. This works best when your system contains the font at double the size of the character pair.

  2. Choose Auto Kern from the Format menu, and then choose On.

All pairs in the selected text that correspond to the kerning pairs in the built-in kerning table of the font are kerned. The RSG preset font size below which characters are not autokerned is 12 points. You can change this minimum size and adjust the percentage at which characters are autokerned in the Typographic Preferences dialog box. See "To Set Text Preferences for Your Document", later in this chapter.

If a particular character pair does not kern, then the font has no kerning specifications for those two characters. You can either manually kern the pair or add the kerning specification for those two characters to the font's kerning table.
To remove the effect of automatic kerning, select the desired range of text, choose Auto Kern from the Format menu, and then choose off. Removing the kerning specs may not return the pairs to normal spacing if specified tracking, autotracking, and letterspacing are in effect.
